Character Information
Name: Chuuya Nakahara
Canon: Bungou Stray Dogs
Canon Point: Post Ch. 61.5
Age: 22
History: Over here

Personality:

When one would consider an individual in the mafia, they would initially think of someone a certain way, and Chuuya fits that idea. Right from the start, he absolutely exuded confidence, a bit of arrogance, and a sharp tongue; holding a taste for antagonizing Dazai, and very much someone who tended to be rather blunt as well.

He doesn’t sugar coat his words and takes his job as an executive in the Port Mafia very seriously, having a reputation as the strongest martial artist in the entirety of it. Chuuya is incredibly loyal and dutiful, a very hard working man who does his best in all that he can do in the name of the organization. Though, it isn’t as if he doesn’t have his flaws, it’s just that most people don’t get to see them. He is incredibly temperamental, loves to taunt and ridicule others in a fight, and loses most reason if anyone tries to bring up Dazai in his presence.

Chuuya might just seem impossibly hot-headed, but it isn’t as if he is completely unreasonable; he is willing to talk things over if need be. Most of the time he can be pretty level-headed, and is reliable enough that Mori had once tasked him as the one who went to speak with the Armed Detective Agency during the Three Way Conflict with the Guild. He only fought when he needed to, and it’s known that he highly enjoys fighting against people who actually put up a good fight, but knows when to stop and disengage when it’s necessary. There’s no remorse given when it comes to putting others in danger if it’s something the mafia’s doing, such as when the mafia intentionally endangered Naomi Tanizaki and Hirako during the aforementioned incident.

He’s someone who has absolutely no qualms with killing, but he isn’t mindless about it and understands the value of life. Contrary to what some may think, there’s a methodical way of how he goes about things, as he understands compromise and rationality are needed in certain situations-- something he likely learned from his mentor, Kouyou Ozaki.

His start in life wasn’t easy, and initially he would just go with the flow, even when he found out who was responsible for trying to kill him when he was only fifteen years old. He could have just simply killed Arthur Rimbaud, but instead heard him out and Arthur’s final words did a lot to change Chuuya’s outlook on not only life, but himself as well. Perhaps that is why he accepted Rimbaud’s hat as his entry gift into the Port Mafia, and cherishes it to this very day

Chuuya will put aside his personal grudges where needed, such as during the start of the Cannibalism arc, and back when he had to deal with Sakaguchi Ango during the events of Dead Apple. He is someone who keeps his word, and if he says he will do something, he will do it. Chuuya is impossibly loyal and will defend the Mafia’s well-being just as he had done with his former group, the Sheep. Due to this loyalty and his outlook on devotion, he sees betrayal as inexcusable, which is part of the reason why he looks down on Dazai, since he’d defected from the Mafia without so much as a word. While he can be pretty harsh, cruel, and sometimes even vicious, he’s been known to treat his subordinates well and shows fierce anger towards anyone who harms them while they’re under his care.

Despite being such a feared and respected mafia executive, however, it does not mean Chuuya was always this way. He once struggled with identity and his place in humanity due to his connection to the god Arahabaki, worrying about how human he really was and made worse by not knowing the circumstances of why he’d been released from the government facility he’d been in to start with. He began instilling the use of wearing gloves as part of a personal restraint on himself, promising to only remove them once he knew he would not be able to enjoy the thrill of a fight-- meaning, the times when he has to allow Corruption to take over. He has even come to favor kicking over using his hands if he can avoid it.

His distaste for betrayal and his new outlook on life all happened when he’d been younger, stemming from not only Rimbaud’s last words to him, which left a lasting impression on who he was as a person, but from the Sheep’s betrayal when they tried to kill him. It left an emotional scar on him, to say the least.

Chuuya is also impossibly stubborn, but tends to mostly butt heads with Dazai, not agreeing with the man in many regards. Whether it’s just a mention of him or the man himself, which ends up being something of his downfall from time to time, Chuuya will invariably lose his cool. Dazai had a warped sense of intellect and way of thinking, and it always annoyed him. Not to mention the way the other always mocked and demeaned him, mostly making insults at his height or his taste in clothes or so on. It’s gotten to the point that the slightest insult from Dazai sets him off like a grenade, and he doesn’t even think once about tempering this despite being an obvious and clear weakness of his. Though, it isn’t as if he doesn’t acknowledge that the other is extremely smart and is more of the technical ‘brains’ between the two of them, and likely why in the past he turned them into a formidable team when Dazai was in the Port Mafia. He trusts in Dazai’s strategies and ability to overcome a situation over anything else.

He’s the type of person who generally seems like at times doesn’t care, but actually cares too much despite saying otherwise. Underneath is still someone kind, but it takes a lot to get there due to the nature of his work, as vulnerability seems like an awful thing to have as a mafioso. Chuuya is also a very avid lover of things like wine (despite how easy it is to get him drunk) and cigarettes, even if he only smokes on rare occasions when he gets stressed out.

Essentially one can look at him as the quintessential mafioso: strong, confident, brutal, unafraid to kill, arrogant, and fairly blunt. Loyal and Devoted, too, with a touch of some temperamental, hairline anger, (occasional) reckless attitude, but not someone that should not be taken lightly.

Abilities & Skills: Notably, it should be said that Chuuya is an extremely talented fighter to the point that he has become known as Port Mafia’s strongest martial artist. Specializing in using primarily kicks/his legs, as well as punches, he is incredibly strong to the point that him punching a wall is enough to leave a small crater in it. Years of fighting/training helped him be like this without the use of his ability.

His ability is called “For the Tainted Sorrow” and essentially boils down to that Chuuya can control the gravity of anything he touches, including himself. He’s been seen standing upside down on ceilings, and can walk on them as well. It has been stated that he could crush a tank bare-handed.

There’s a more dangerous, unstable side to his ability that’s called ‘Corruption’ and can only be activated by a certain phrase. Once activated, it reverts Chuuya to a purely destructive, uncontrolled being and while Corruption is active, he can shoot balls of compressed gravity that essentially act as black holes that swallow up anything they touch. The downside is essentially that this cannot be stopped unless it’s nullified and will otherwise kill him.

Inventory/Companions:
- One pack of cigarettes and a lighter
- His cellphone
- A sharp, serrated knife in it’s sheath

Choice: Harpy
Reason: Being as his ability allowed him to defy gravity and fight while flying through the air freely and the like, a winged creature seemed to fit him. Plus the temperament and a lot of the additional traits just suited him so well, I couldn’t see him as anything else.
